This morning Andrew made poached eggs for breakfast. I have not been a huge fan of eggs made this way but Andrew has really nailed how to make them!

Then we went out to look for an electronics store so Andrew could look for some parts to fix his motorcycle and generally go for a drive, maybe do some clothes shopping.

We found the electronics store, Main Electronics, the fellow there was very helpful and I picked up a little electronics kit which should be fun to put together.

We then hit the Metrotown Mall for some lunch and clothes shopping, Andrew looking for some shoes and me looking to get new shorts to replace a few pairs that have gotten much too scruffy. Andrew didn’t find the shoes but I came away with four new pairs of shorts, very pleased about that.

On the way home we stopped at MEC where we both looked for FiveFinger paddling shoes, they had my size so I picked them up, Andrew again was stymied. Then home where we’ve been puttering about, tidying up, installed StarCraft 2 and picked up some fixings for dinner tonight.

It’s just started raining outside! It’s been so long since it rained in Vancouver. I’m going to go on the balcony and soak it up.

Later days.

iPad

Unsurprisingly I’ve picked up an iPad. So far I really like it. The screen and interface are really smooth and quick. Putting the iPad into landscape mode, the keyboard is really large and I’m able to type very quickly

What surprises me most is that this really is the device, or an implementation of the device I’ve wanted for years. I can surf the web, read ebooks, write emails, notes, watch movies and play games.

If I can find a way to tether my iPhone to the iPad so I have data everywhere I’ll be all set :)

Knee

March 7th, 2010 kristan Comments off

On Feb 27 I was riding Ned’s on Vancouver’s North Shore for the first time when I took an ugly fall, hurting my right knee. After hobbling off the mountain with the help of great ride partners I saw a couple of doctors, and got some crutches.

Last week I was told I have torn my LCL and ACL I don’t know yet how bad the tears are, I have to get an MRI to find out, but two doctors have estimated that at least the LCL tear is very near complete, if not actually complete.

This week I’m able to put more weight on my leg. Though after two weeks of not walking on it it’s very weak and my knee feels squishy and unstable when I try to walk over it.

I’m glad to be nearly rid of the crutches, this city is not friendly to them, most doors don’t have handicap access buttons, many doors are very heavy. Fortunately people have generally been quite friendly and helpful, holding doors and generally keeping an eye out so as to not knock me over.

Next up is physiotherapy to build leg strength back up and waiting for the MRI and appointment with the orthopedic surgeon.

This week I should get a brace that’ll allow me to walk, jog, climb stairs, desend hills without concerns of my knee collapsing.

Reliability calculation as a metaphor for understanding the bog ideas have to go through in large corporations. My hat off to you Mr Doctorow.

Goofing Off

January 30th, 2010 kristan Comments off

This weekend I’m taking things a bit easier than I have been. I went mountain biking this morning, my first ride since October! Then I have pretty much been goofing off since then.

It’s feeling good. I have a hard time just sitting. Doing ‘nothing’. I’m trying today to just do whatever, be where I am. Play.

the baby tooth prevails

Two hours later I’m out of the dentist chair. My remaining baby tooth survives, now with fresh root canal. Ow. But the little guy has been hanging in. He needs a strong name. Maybe Drake or Dirk.
